Course Outline
Positive Choices are commissioned by the Coventry City Council and Public Health England to support young people and families in Coventry. We are made up of professionals from a range of backgrounds, including teaching, the police, mental health and social care.

Hidden Harm which is also known as Children Affected by parental substance use. We support children and young people from age 5 up to age 18 that are either currently living with parents/carer that are using substances including problematic alcohol use or have previously lived with parents/carer where substances have been an issue. We have specialist Children and Families workers that are trained to support young people to have greater insight and understanding, empower them to know risks and harms and how they can keep themselves and others safe when needed.
Course Modules
6 sessions in a group setting that will involve some of the following benefits:
- Peer support and empathy.
- Dispelling any myths about substances.
- Keeping themselves safe.
- Understanding why people use substances.
- Building resilience.

Student Expected Outcomes
Children and young people from age 5 up to age 18 supported who are either currently living with parents/carer that are using substances including problematic alcohol use or have previously lived with parents/carer where substances have been an issue

Admissions Criteria
Currently or previously lived with family/carers that have either used illegal drugs or have used alcohol problematically (frequent drinking that is affecting their role as a parent/carer)
Staff Experience
We are highly qualified practitioners, adept in the adoption of Psychosocial Interventions, including Motivational interviewing, solution-focused interventions and cognitive behavioural interventions to support behavioural change.
We have qualified acupuncture and sleep therapists as well as specialised staff who support with drug/alcohol use, relationships, online safety and sexual health, children affected by parental substance use and we are also qualified to support parents. We can also offer progression and development opportunities for young people through our volunteer and peer mentor programme and qualifications.
Our service is free and voluntary, and we work on a consent basis.
